چکیده

Abstract This paper investigates sources of early signs nitrate pollution in a karst aquifer and major spring. Te Waikoropupu Springs are the largest springs New Zealand amongst Southern Hemisphere with mean outflow 13.4 m 3 /s. They discharge clearest water ever recorded from spring, but warning quality deterioration is signalled by increasing concentrations. The partly artesian 2.85 km volume karstified Ordovician marble transmission time averaging 7.9 years. Reservoir porosity unusually high for crystalline carbonate rock, estimated as 6%. Water emerging at Main Spring (9.89 /s) adjacent Fish Creek (3.48 mix recharge four main sources. means mass balance modelling proportions coming each source, origins contamination contribution nitrification. losses into bed upper Takaka River, about 17 Springs, provide 13% flow Spring, 34% 83% discharged submarine springs. Infiltration rain falling over farmed land middle valley to supply 10% total contribute 82% NO -N output Nitrification accounts 16% discharged. A reduction leachate concentration would be required bring values back levels 1970s.

A conceptual model of flow to the Waikoropupu Springs, NW Nelson, New Zealand, based on hydrometric and tracer (18O, Cl,3H and CFC) evidence

The Waikoropupu Springs, a large karst resurgence 4 km from the coast, are supplied by the Arthur Marble Aquifer (AMA) underlying the Takaka Valley, South Island, New Zealand. New evidence on the recharge sources in the catchment, combined with previous results, is used to establish a new recharge model for the AMA. Combined with the oxygen-18 mass balance, this yields a quantitative descriptio...

Sources of Nitrate and Bromide ContaminantsinGroundwater ofthe Alluvial Aquifer of Arak, Iran

The present study investigated NO3- and Br- contamination in groundwater of Arak aquifer, Markazi province, Iran. Correlation and factor analyzes were used to detecti nterrelations and sources of NO3- and Br- ion concentration and other physicochemical variables. No correlation was observed between NO3- and otherscontents, but a positive correlation was identified between Br-and other majorvari...

Arthur Stanley Wohlmann, the first government balneologist in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION Geologically, New Zealand lies along the intersection of two of the earth's major plates and therefore earthquakes, volcanoes, and hot springs are widespread. The original inhabitants, the Maori, were aware of the therapeutic value of hot-pools and, as Europeans settled on the islands in the nineteenth century, many travellers commented circumstantially on the potential of the pool...

Groundwater Recharge Interface and Nitrate Discharge: Central Canterbury, New Zealand

Regional surveys of groundwater quality in Central Canterbury, from 1977 to the present, show widespread occurrence of nitrate contamination primarily from agricultural land use. Two reported analyses of these surveys, in 1984 and 2002, describe a general decrease of nitrate concentration with depth from the groundwater table to uncontaminated water at about 50-80 m. This high quality water is ...

Relating nitrogen sources and aquifer susceptibility to nitrate in shallow ground waters of the United States.

Characteristics of nitrogen loading and aquifer susceptibility to contamination were evaluated to determine their influence on contamination of shallow ground water by nitrate. A set of 13 explanatory variables was derived from these characteristics, and variables that have a significant influence were identified using logistic regression (LR). Multivariate LR models based on more than 900 samp...
